In every relationship, there’s love, laughter—and sometimes, a few carefully kept secrets. According to a 2024 Bankrate survey, nearly 40% of married or cohabiting adults in the U.S. admit to hiding financial details from their partners, whether it’s secret spending, hidden debt, or undisclosed accounts.
But beyond the numbers, we started wondering—do certain professions carry more secrets than others? More specifically, do creative professionals like designers keep more to themselves than the average partner? After all, design is an intensely personal, often all-consuming profession. Could that translate into emotional or practical secrets in their personal lives?
To find out, we interviewed three designers, peeking past the pixels and into their private lives. Here’s what they had to say about love, work, and the things they’d never tell their significant other.
Designer Secrets: Love, Work & What They’ll Never Tell Bae
We asked 3 designers some spicy questions. Here’s the tea.
Q: What’s your relationship status?
Designer 1:
Taken off the market, about to wed.
Designer 2:
In a relationship.
Designer 3:
Single.
Q: How busy does design keep you?
Designer 1:
9.5/10 busy—on a scale of 1-10.
Designer 2:
“A lot.”
Designer 3:
Not design itself but work. 7/10.
Q: Rate your relationship life (1–10)
Designer 1:
8/10
Designer 2:
8
Designer 3:

Q: Should spouses know everything about each other?
Designer 1:
After marriage? Yes. In a relationship? Maybe 60-70%.
Designer 2:
“Not necessarily, you need to have a life of your own too.”
Designer 3:
“Transparency is key for me.”
Q: One secret you’d share with anyone—but not your significant other?
Designer 1:
“All my streams of income.”
Designer 2:
“Can’t think of one.”
Designer 3:
“Honestly, I don’t think there’s any.”
So, What Did We Learn?
After speaking to these designers, a few patterns and some surprises emerged.
1. Design is intense, but not an excuse.
All three designers agree that work is demanding (with one rating their design busyness at a 9.5/10). But despite packed schedules, most still rated their relationship lives relatively high—suggesting that being busy doesn’t necessarily mean being emotionally unavailable.
2. Honesty is… situational.
When asked if spouses should know everything:
-
One designer believed full transparency is key.
-
Another felt maybe 60–70% honesty is enough during a relationship, but full disclosure starts after marriage.
-
A third emphasized the importance of having your own life outside the relationship.
This range of views shows no one-size-fits-all answer to intimacy or openness, especially in the creative world where personal space is often sacred.
3. Secrets are subtle—not scandalous.
No one confessed to anything wild. In fact, two designers said they had no secrets they wouldn’t share with a partner. The only standout? One designer admitted they’d never reveal all their streams of income. A fair boundary or a red flag? You decide.
Final Thoughts
Designers, like everyone else, walk the line between transparency and privacy. While their profession demands emotional investment, creativity, and solo problem-solving, it doesn’t necessarily make them more secretive in relationships. If anything, it reveals a thoughtful, intentional approach to connection—one where boundaries and communication coexist.
So, do designers keep secrets? Sometimes. But not the kind you’d expect.
