I  Prioritize My Skills Over Anything Else – Ephraim Ugosimaco

Designers are often plagued with client’s request to perform the impossible with Photoshop. The reason stems from the prolific skills of designers able to redefine  utilizing Creative software. This genre i.e. the reality warping one is the photomanipulation genre  and already has notable names like Franklin Ozomah a Toronto film festival winner.

Today in NGD’s spotlight we bring you a rising star and winner of the recent Photomanipulation Challenge – Ephraim Ugosimaco. A designer with skills good enough to realistically  place himself beside Cristiano Ronaldo in  the most natural way possible.

We have him here for a dive into his  business philosophy, love for the art and his unique take on design software.

1. How did you get into graphic design?

My passion for design started in secondary school where I began editing with my phone, impressing my classmates who often asked me to do the same for them, leading me to realize I could turn this passion into a career, which motivated me to study Computer Science.

Among my design endeavors, photo manipulation is the aspect that brings me the greatest satisfaction. The sheer joy of conceptualizing innovative ideas for photo manipulation and successfully executing them fills me with a sense of accomplishment. Photo manipulation provides an avenue for me to unleash my creativity; nonetheless, I believe there is still untapped potential within me to contribute towards making the world a better and more accessible place through my design skills, particularly in this era of Artificial Intelligence.

3.What resources do you utilize for learning?

My dedication to continuous learning knows no bounds; I invest in various photo manipulation courses and draw inspiration from @christianpsart on Instagram, as his works serve as a constant source of motivation for me.

4. Do you consider photo manipulation to be difficult?

For me I don’t see photo manipulation as being hard, the hard part is coming up with an intriguing inspiration, and sometimes after the implementation it doesn’t come out as imagined. i keep trying till I get it right.

5. Help shed light on the  Coreldraw vs Photoshop issue

In my personal viewpoint, I have a preference for Photoshop as it specifically caters to photo editing, which aligns well with my area of expertise. Corel Draw, on the other hand, can be likened to Adobe Illustrator.

6. What role do you think graphic designers play in today’s world?

In today’s world, graphic designers play a crucial role in various aspects of society. They contribute significantly to visual communication and the overall aesthetics of products, services, and media. Graphic designers are responsible for creating visually appealing designs that convey messages effectively and engage audiences.

They help build strong brand identities, develop eye-catching advertisements, design user-friendly interfaces for digital platforms, enhance the visual storytelling in films and animations, and create visually captivating publications.

Graphic designers also play a vital role in the fields of marketing, advertising, web design, user experience (UX) design, and even in the development of innovative solutions using emerging technologies like virtual reality and augmented reality.

7. Member of NGD since 2019, what do you love about the community?

The NGD family’s genuine critiques have been instrumental in my growth within the community, and I genuinely appreciate how the organizers and owners diligently maintain a clean and inspiring environment for fellow designers to draw motivation from.

8. Were you surprised you won the competition.

yes I was surprised.

9. If not you then who would have?

Adeniji Abdullahi Akinola, because I loved his concept.

10. Money, skill or Fame , pick one and why.

I would willingly prioritize my skills over anything else because achieving proficiency in my abilities will lead to both fame and financial success (Money).
