Interview: A Designer’s Journey in Pricing and Growth

1. How did you get started in design?
I started designing in 2020.

2. What were your first rates?
My first rate was ₦1,000 for a logo design.

3. What’s your biggest struggle when charging clients?
One of my biggest struggles is having the confidence to state my rates. There’s always this voice in the back of my head saying the client might walk away. However, I’ve learned to be bold in pricing because, at the end of the day, what you charge reflects how much you value your work.

4. Have your rates improved? What helped?
Yes, my rates have improved. The key factors that helped were improving my design skills, recognizing my worth, and understanding that clients are willing to pay more for quality work.

5. Should designers learn multiple skills to make more money?
Yes, I strongly recommend it. In today’s industry, you can’t rely on just one skill. If you design logos, consider expanding into brand strategy, UI/UX, web design, or motion graphics. As you grow, you can also build a team and start outsourcing to scale your business.
